Respite Care at Home: Planning a Break for Family Carers

A planned break can give a family carer time for rest, appointments or other commitments. Respite care at home means discussing how someone else will provide the agreed support while the usual carer takes time away.

A planned break begins with clear care arrangements.

AT A GLANCE

Plan the handover as carefully as the dates. A familiar routine, clear responsibilities and confirmed cover help everyone understand what to expect.

01

Be clear about the break you need

Start with the dates and the parts of the day you need covered. A regular afternoon away is different from a week’s absence or several nights of support. Explain whether anyone else will be in the home and which responsibilities they will keep.

Speak with the person receiving care about the arrangement. Discuss what would help them feel comfortable with a new person and which familiar routines they want maintained. Respite should be planned around both the person’s support needs and the break the family carer requires.

02

Describe the support in practical detail

Write down the main tasks usually carried out: personal care, meals, companionship, agreed medication routines or help settling at night. Describe timings, preferences and what the person can manage independently. The provider will need to assess the support rather than simply repeat an informal family arrangement.

If needs vary, explain the difficult periods as well as an ordinary day. This helps the team consider appropriate visit lengths, staffing and whether visiting, live-in or overnight support is suitable.

03

Arrange an introduction and handover

Ask whether an introduction can be arranged before the break and what information the team needs. A written care plan should guide the support, with clear contact details and agreed arrangements for access to the home.

Talk about how the person likes to communicate, the activities they enjoy and what can make a routine more comfortable. Share sensitive information through the provider’s assessment process. Avoid leaving private care details in an unsecured place or sending them through public chat.

04

Confirm cover, costs and contact arrangements

Before making firm travel plans, confirm the support dates, staffing, proposed charges and terms. Ask what happens if a carer becomes unavailable and who will contact you if circumstances change. Do not assume emergency or last-minute cover is guaranteed.

Discuss how much contact the family carer wants during the break and who else can be contacted with the person’s agreement. Clear arrangements can avoid unnecessary uncertainty while still allowing the carer time away.

05

Consider different ways to take a break

Respite can take different forms. Made4Care discusses respite care at home in Peterborough and Cambridge. For some families, attendance at our Peterborough Day Care Centre may be another option for daytime support, subject to assessment and agreed arrangements.

If you want advice about local support or possible help with costs, contact the relevant council or a carers’ organisation. Funding and eligibility must be checked with the responsible organisation; an enquiry to Made4Care does not establish entitlement.
