MADE4CARE JOURNAL · GUIDANCE FOR FAMILIES
Companionship care creates agreed time for company and everyday activities. For someone who would welcome more conversation, shared interests or support to get out, it can be a useful option to discuss alongside other help at home.
Made4Care · Care with Compassion
AT A GLANCE
Start with what the person enjoys. A good companionship enquiry describes their interests, preferred routine and any practical assistance needed to take part.
01
Companionship can mean a conversation over a drink, looking through photographs, enjoying a game or spending time on a familiar interest. The activity does not have to be complicated to matter to the person.
Ask what they would like to do rather than choosing an activity for them. Some people enjoy a lively conversation; others prefer quieter company or time to get to know someone. Mention language, communication and accessibility preferences when making an enquiry.
02
The person may want company at home or help to plan an outing, shopping trip or appointment. Explain where they would like to go and the assistance needed before, during and after the activity.
Outings require practical planning. Discuss mobility, access, transport, timings and any costs. A companionship visit should not be assumed to include driving, lifting or other tasks unless these have been assessed and expressly agreed.
03
If help with personal routines, meals or medication is also needed, say so at the start. These tasks should be considered during assessment and recorded in the care plan at the appropriate level. They are not informal extras to add to a visit without discussion.
A clear plan helps the person, family and carers understand what will happen. It should also allow enough time for practical assistance without removing the time set aside for company.
04
A person may feel unsure about a new visitor. Ask the provider how introductions work and discuss whether a relative should be present if the person wants this. Share a few interests or conversation topics that the person is comfortable discussing.
After the first visits, ask how the arrangement feels. The person may want a different activity, another time of day or a review of the visit length. Their feedback should shape the discussion.

For people who prefer a group setting, our adult Day Care Centre in Peterborough offers another option to explore. Home companionship and centre attendance are different arrangements; ask about suitability, attendance, transport and proposed charges before deciding.
YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Discuss the activity and practical assistance required. Any outing must be suitable, assessed and agreed, including transport where relevant.
These needs can be discussed together. The care plan and visit length should reflect all agreed tasks.
Company may be valued, but experiences differ. Ask the person what connections and activities they want rather than promising a particular outcome.
